Thursday 7 October update
Due to the unpredictability of the COVID-19 situation, the Labour weekend Wellington Sevens tournament will now be a Wellington-only tournament.
On the evening of Wednesday 6 October, we regrettably informed clubs invited to the tournament of our decision to cancel the national Wellington Sevens. We now plan to host a Wellington/Hutt Valley club tournament on Saturday 23 October at Awakairangi Park in Upper Hutt. More details on this tournament will be available in the coming week.
Teams from across New Zealand were invited to the Wellington Sevens with the caveat that their region – and the Wellington region – must be in Alert Level 1 on Labour weekend. As events held during Alert Level 2 are limited to 100 people, we would not have been permitted to host a tournament which would have well exceeded this 100-person limit.
It is highly unlikely that any part of New Zealand will be in Alert Level 1 by Labour weekend. Therefore – with just over two weeks until Labour weekend – to give clubs, players and spectators some certainty about the tournament, we made the decision to cancel the national Wellington Sevens tournament, and instead focus on making plans to host a one-day club tournament.
It was not a decision we wanted to make, but, given the circumstances, it was one that made the most sense. We look forward to hosting our club competition on Saturday 23 October, and to the New Zealand Championships in Hamilton in March 2022.
